Natural Easter Egg Dye Recipes + Win A Vitamix - Kim Byers (2024)

Dyeing Easter eggs is one of our favorite Easter family traditions.We host an Easter brunch each year with an egg hunt and that means lots of Easter eggs. Honestly, we don’t just dye eggs… we paint eggs, we color eggs, we make patterns on eggs with craft supplies, we decorate eggs to look like little bunnies… and this year, my favorite so far is creatingnatural egg dye recipes with my Vitamix.

Coloring eggs with natural food dyes leaves the hues subtle, but quite beautiful. I’m sharing five Vitamix recipes for dyeing Easter eggs with you today and my number one tip for richer hues is to leave the eggs in the dyes overnight in the frig. You’ll notice that some of my colors are rich and some are very subtle, overnight in the refrigerator is the difference.

So grab your Vitamix and let’s get crafty. Don’t have one? Well I’m giving one away so make sure that you hop (like my pun?!) down to the bottom of this post and enter for a chance to win!

When I told my kiddos that we were going to make our own natural food dyes with the Vitamix, they had a hundred ideas… mostly because they love watching it work. {grin} I convinced them to narrow the list down with the promise that we would try more. I can tell you… they didn’t all come out as expected! For instance, who ever thought red onion, which looks pink when blended, would make a green food dye?! And for the blueberry dye above, I was going to blend it more into a puree, but my boys thought they looked like dinosaur eggs with the speckles so I gave in. {wink}

Here are the natural food dye recipes that worked extremely well in our Vitamix. Again, leaving the eggs in the dye overnight in the refrigerator will make many of the subtle colors much richer. By the way, on top of how easy it is to create five different natural dyes in a matter of minutes, clean-up in a cinch. Between batches I just blend soap and water and it cleans all the color and odors right out. Making natural food dyes the traditional way will take a separate boiler for each color and I don’t know about you… but I don’t love washing dishes or waiting for things to boil.

Green – Red Onion (1/2 water, 3 tsp vinegar, 1 medium red onion quartered and peeled, medium speed for five minutes)

Speckled Purple –Blueberries(1/2 water, 3 tsp vinegar, 1 cup blueberries, medium speed for 2 minutes)

Blue – Red Cabbage(1/2 water, 3 tsp vinegar, 1/2 cabbage quartered and peeled, medium speed for five minutes)

Yellow – Orange Peel and Carrots (1/2 cup water, 3 tsp vinegar, 1 large orange peel, 5 baby carrots, medium speed for five minutes; Note: orange peel or carrots alone will provide a lighter hue, but together they produce a bright hue)

Light brown – Grape juice (1 cup grape juice, 3 tsp vinegar, medium speed for 3 minutes to warm)

There are so many other fruits and veggies we plan on trying, beets and strawberries are on the shortlist!
